What We Do
As one of the few recital series in North America dedicated to presenting internationally acclaimed artists, both emerging and established, the Vancouver Recital Society (VRS) has built a reputation around the world for innovation and excellence in programming, garnering prestigious awards in New York and Toronto.
Tomorrow’s Stars Today
Formed in 1980, the VRS now presents its recital series at four venues: Vancouver Playhouse; Orpheum Theatre; Kay Meek Centre; and the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. Long before they became household names, the VRS has presented in their Canadian and/or Vancouver recital debuts such luminaries as Cecilia Bartoli (at right), Maxim Vengerov, Anne Sofie von Otter, András Schiff, Joshua Bell, Steven Isserlis, Bryn Terfel, and championed such Canadian musicians as Angela Cheng, Scott St. John, James Ehnes, Richard Raymond and Jon Kimura Parker.
In addition to its series at the Vancouver Playhouse, Kay Meek Centre and the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, the VRS trains the spotlight on the giants of the classical music world in special concerts at the Orpheum Theatre. On these occasions, the VRS has presented performances by such artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Kiri te Kanawa, Jessye Norman, Itzhak Perlman, Evgeny Kissin, Murray Perahia, Kathleen Battle, and Vladimir Ashkenazy, to name but a few.
Built on trust, Vancouver audiences have come to expect that a Vancouver Recital Society concert will provide the experience of discovery, of hearing the “future” of classical music, and of uncovering the “superstar” candidates for the 21st century.
