Concert 4: PAUL LEWIS

Wrapping up his four-concert musical journey into the works of Haydn, Brahms and Beethoven, Paul Lewis continues to reveal his deep understanding of, and sensitivity to, the music of these three Austro-German masters. The first of his four concerts in our 2017-18 Season set a high bar indeed, underlining the humour in Haydn and the tenderness in Brahms; Beethoven’s rarely heard Bagatelles made a great link between the two opposites. Experience the magic of Paul Lewis as he draws you into the very heart of the music.

HAYDN: Sonata in E minor, Hob. XVI:34

Concert 2: Paul Lewis

POP OUT PERFORMANCE

Take an exciting musical journey into the works of Haydn, Brahms and Beethoven with Paul Lewis at the helm. Paul is known for immersing himself in epic multi-year musical projects, which have included his vast study of Beethoven’s complete sonatas and piano concertos and Schubert’s final piano works. His latest odyssey delves into Haydn’s piano sonatas and the piano compositions of Johannes Brahms, bridged by Beethoven’s three sets of Bagatelles before culminating with the Diabelli Variations, described as Beethoven’s greatest work for the piano. Paul’s project comprises four concerts spread over two seasons; the first two concerts take place in the 2017-18 Season, the final two in our 2018-19 Season.

BEETHOVEN: 11 Bagatelles Op. 119
HAYDN: Sonata in E flat, Hob. XVI:49
HAYDN: Sonata in B minor, Hob. XVI:32
BRAHMS: 4 Klavierstücke, Op. 119

“His account (of Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1) has clarity, muscle and steely pride, but also intimacy, vulnerability and volatility: the combination is magnetic” — The Guardian

Yuja Wang – CANCELLED

YUJA WANG – CANCELLED

I have been working hard to find a date in the next few months to play my postponed recitals in Vancouver, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Costa Mesa but I’m sorry to tell my fans that it is simply impossible. I have been given strict instructions by my doctors that I’m trying very hard to follow to ensure that I remain healthy. I thank you all for your support and kindness and I am already working on returning to you all with a recital programme as soon as I am able.” Yuja Wang

Dear Yuja fans:

Unfortunately, the above statement from Yuja Wang confirms what we have been trying to avoid: her Vancouver concert is cancelled. This news is as disappointing to us as it is to you. You have been patient with us while we worked very hard over the past month — along with our colleagues in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Orange County who were also affected by the fact that Yuja was indisposed — to find a new date for her concert in the not-too-distant future. We were optimistic that we’d be able to reschedule her concert for September, however the statement indicates that it’s not going to happen anytime soon.

Accordingly, the Vancouver Recital Society and the Chan Centre will be issuing a full refund on the price of your ticket/s to the credit card used at the time of purchase.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support. The VRS has a proud history in this city and beyond, providing music lovers with superb concerts for over 39 years. Our track record for presenting outstanding artists has made us one of the most respected concert series on the continent. We’re deeply disappointed that we’ve been forced to cancel this concert. Thankfully, cancellations of this nature don’t occur very often, but when they do happen they come at a very real cost to us. Our patrons mean a great deal to this organization… we simply couldn’t do this without you!

Now, we look to the future and keep our fingers crossed for the day Yuja Wang returns to Vancouver.

Most sincerely,

Leila Getz, C.M., O.B.C., DFA
Founder & Artistic Director
